Artist research - Lari Pittman

Pittman’s paintings are mostly inspired by commercial advertising and decorative traditions. They’re meticulously layered, transforming pattern into luxurious scenes fraught with complexity, difference and desire. If you picked apart his paintings, each individual subject, they’re filled in with blocks of colour, which is how I construct my work. However, despite being similar aesthetically and in methodology, I find his composition too busy. I want mu subject in plain view with nowhere to escape from simply seeing it.
