Cooper’s work mainly focuses on the figurative, with some describing her as a magic realist. She brings a unapologetic female perspective to her subject matter, which encompasses sexuality, motherhood, life and death. My practice links to hers through the figurative and also through life. I am breathing new life into these strange creatures nobody will have seen before. Cooper’s paintings seem to derive from the ordinary, but them appear unordinary. This is a technique that I sometimes use, taking normal things and jigsawing them with other ordinary things to make them look odd.
