ART190 Project

This is a line drawing of a tree woman. It was the first piece I did for the ART190 project. I am to create a portfolio of work which shows abnormal faces and figures. I plan to turn this outline into a lino print, and explore what I can create with them.

For the picure on the left, I decided to change the skin colour of this figure to something that isn't traditionally seen, i.e. blue. I also decided to elongate the neck and remove the head to make it look a little more odd. The picture on the right is showing the beginings of my experimentation with mouth painting. I plan to create most of a body using this technique. I was inspired by an artist I researched, Mariam Pare, to give it a try. I also thought that, as I will be drawing/painting many parts of the body, it would be interesting to use a different part of my body to paint/draw with.

For the majority of my work in the ART190, I'm going to be focusing on printing, especially lino printing. I started with several A5 pieces of lino. I cut 2 skulls and a tree figure, seen to the right, and did a series of different colours and papers. I decided to change the size of the lino cuts, and made many smaller cuts, including a woman's face with rain clouds for hair. a jigsaw puzzle face and several facial features which I plan to put together in an abormal way. I next decided to go bigger and do several A4 size lino cuts. I used some tattoo designs I had designed, a tree dancer, a fire woman, and a figure embedded in a sword.

These blue paintings and charcoal sketches are inspired by Emil Alzamora's sculptures. I really like how he morphs the human shape, making it not quite 'normal', if normal exists. However, I really dont like creating sculptures myself so I attempted to capture what he is trying to show in paintings and sketches, but I don't think it would have the same effect.

This A1 piece was done in ink. I was attempting to capture the stule of traditional tattoo designs.

These A1 oil paintings are plans to a potential final piece.
