After starting this piece in November 2016, I and fellow student Sophie gibbons have finally finished are large-scale collaboration project, we named it ‘Working Both Ways’ due to our different ways of working. Now it has been completed we can consider the place context with greater ease. For our first experimentation, we placed it in a corridor in the Priestman Building so anyone walking past could observe it, whether they enjoyed art or otherwise. This theory of people not being able to get away from art first occurred to me when thinking about the context of tattoos in the modern day. Although gotten for personal and private reasons, visible tattoos in public is an art form shown to the general public without choice. I wanted to see the feedback our work would get in a public domain. The results all seemed to be rather positive, with people mainly attracted to Sophie’s patterned designs and the sheer scale of the work. Next we decided to go to a classical contemporary space, the white cube gallery, and placed our work in the Shaun Project Space. Personally, I think the piece belongs in the white cube space. Since reading ‘Inside the White Cube’ by Brian Doherty, I’ve noticed that white cube spaces and old religious spaces have similar effects on those who enter, with my parts of the piece have religious context due to the myths involved, I feel everything is connected. We considered putting the work outside as it has a graphic almost street art abstract context, however, since we worked so long on the piece, we did not want to risk any damage to it.
