Backgrounds

Since my trip to Durham cathedral, I decided to use the sketches I had created of the inside architecture and use them in my work as backgrounds. Currently, throughout my practice, backgrounds is something that I have attempted to avoid, usually by filling the white space with another colour, like with my largescale collaboration piece ‘Work Both Ways’ 2017. The A5 sketches served as a plan to draw outli8nes on acetate before projecting them onto a large piece of paper. I first however, drew up my Hydra design, as I had not used this one in a while. While sketching the small architectural pieces, speed was key as I would soon be asked to leave due to a private event. Therefore I used a very rough but precise style so I still captured the beauty of the design, just in a different way. I decided to use this same style of my largescale piece as well. To give a better sense of depth, I painted the Hydra. As a change, I painted with brushes rather than with my hands like I usually do, just to see what differences it would have.
