Philips’ focus in his work is the self, the self-organisation of exhibitions and the collaborative side to art developed in conversation with others. He likes the idea of never making anything in isolation. He founded the CIRCA projects which is a contemporary art organisation interested in exploration, not being confined to just one gallery. Their first project ‘Space Release’ was hosted in a factory where Robert Stevenson designed trains, a very historical site. It was a multi-event exhibition with having the freedom of this building. The second project with Giles Bailey, they worked together corrupting their roles and exploring the potential of ‘de-organisation’.
