Sophie’s work has developed to focus more on animation. Her first attempt was a ballerina drawn in pencil. For her SPP crit, she had moved on from pencil and started working in chalk. The animation was of a boxer getting in and out of a ring. She uses black and white chalk and I really like the loose imagery it brings. This piece has 22 images in a loop. All the individual drawings have a sense of movement even before they are put together. I enjoyed how on some drawings, there were white spots flicked onto them, this reminds me of a damaged film reel, making at very atmospheric. What Sophie deemed ‘mistakes’ I feel makes it; it made it feel more personal.

Eleanor had been in America for a semester and she had brought back some of her paintings, which were rock stars with animal bodies. They are very anthropomorphic, matching animals to the stars personalities, (Mick Jagger shows off on stage therefore he is a peacock). I like the bright colours in her work; they remind me a lot of Noel Fielding’s work, a mixture of abstract and figurative. For her print on the floor, she used a big wooden block, carved into it and used a steamroller to print it onto material. To me, the markings on the face look like bark or rings in a tree.
