Graham Dolphin

Dolphin sent descriptions of himself to amateur artists and asked them to create a portrait of him from this description. Its interesting to think how different people will imagine you without a visual stimulus, just a written description. The images were based from an idea not what he actually looks like. You can know someones personality from who they write, but not what they look like. Dolphin's main work tends to be centered around music, particularly tragedies in the music industry. One piece in particular was a bench which is a replica of the bench outside Kurt Cobain's old apartment, which is covered in fan's messages. It appears to be a tribute to musicians who are cut off in their prime. its almost an experiment with calligraphy. He would have to write in so many different ways to recreate the various handwriting of the fans. I rather liked the giant magazine adverts. From far away they look normal, but when you look closely, you'll see lots of tiny, almost microscopic writing. almost like the subliminal messaging which can occur in many adverts. I found Dolphin's work very interesting however, I don't think he has any relevance to my current project.
